The center for Childhood safety offers these tips for safe lawn mowing:

  • Keep children and pets out of the yard while mowing
  • Do a walk through of the area before mowing to clear the area of sticks and debris
  • Wear clothing that offers protection, like sturdy shoes with non slip soles, eye protection like glasses, sunglasses or goggles while mowing
  • Read the operating guide for your mower before operating.
  • Do not cut the lawn when it’t raining, lightning or when grass was slippery
  • Children should be at least 12 years old before operating equipment
  • Never allow young children to ride alone on a riding mower
  • Caution children to never place hands near power blades
  • Do not clean grass exit with your hands
  • Do not engage power blades on paved surfaces as there is no protection from thrown objects
  • Make sure your mower is in good working condition at all times
  • Do not operate your mower while under the influence of drugs or alcohol
