Cedar apple rust and scab are a common disease of Apple trees in our area. This can be prevented by applying timely fungicide treatments in the spring. We recommend a minimum of two applications with a preferred third treatment to prevent these two diseases later this season. This year is shaping into the worst year for Spider Mites we've had in years! Burning Bush especially are taking a huge hit. Nearly every Burning Bush I've seen in the city has an infestation of Mites. Treatments are difficult because many miticides only are effective against killing or suppressing the adults but not the eggs. After all the rain these last few months I am beginning to feel like I have opened up a mosquito hotel in my backyard! Not only does the pond have "No Vacancy" they are starting to camp out in pooling water and splitting the rent with the sparrows at the birdbath. In order to prevent the population from increasing further I have turned to Bt pellets (Bacillus thuringiensis), a non-toxic control that is safe for pets & wildlife. I also learned through my research that running water scares them off, so I have upgraded the pond to contain a waterfall.

The Emerald Ash Borer is on the move and 3 aduts have been confirmed in tree traps In Roeland Park according to a spokesperson for Johnson County Research and Extension office.
We've seen a rash of spider mite infestation on Burning Bushes over the last 7-10 days. Be on the look out for discoloring of your burning bushes. If you notice the foliage starting to turn red or an off green color, you may need to take a closer look. The best way to test for mites is the white paper test. Hold a white peice of paper under the foliage and give it a shake. Inspect the paper for small mites that are about the size of ground pepper. It is recommended to use an miticide that controls both the eggs and adults.
It takes approx. 675,000 gallons of water per acre to acheive 1" of water per week.
