Longer Lasting Jack-O-Lanterns

A way to enjoy your Halloween pumpkins for more than a week is to scrape the design into the skin of the pumpkin.  The white and orange contrast still allows for the design to shine through.  Plus you will not have a rotting squash sitting on your front porch.  Just make sure you do not cut all the way through.  For design ideas, trace leaves or Halloween cookie cutters on to the face and carve out with a ribbon tool.

Spider Mite Alert!

We've seen a rash of spider mite infestation on Burning Bushes over the last 7-10 days.  Be on the look out for discoloring of your burning bushes.  If you notice the foliage starting to turn red or an off green color, you may need to take a closer look.  The best way to test for mites is the white paper test.  Hold a white peice of paper under the foliage and give it a shake.  Inspect the paper for small mites that are about the size of ground pepper.  It is recommended to use an miticide that controls both the eggs and adults.

Be on the lookout for Fall Armyworms in turf!

In the last couple weeks, we have seen quite a few outbreaks of Armyworms in Turfgrass.  Usually we see White Grubs this time of year in KC, but this year it is Armyworm.  This pest can do tremendous damage to turf in a very limited amount of time, so if you start seeing brown spots in your lawn, take a closer look!  A large population of Armyworms can turf a green lawn into a brown lawn in very short order, sometimes as little as 24 hours so act fast if you see a problem.  There are multiple insecticides labeled for the control of this pest.

Tracking Emerald Ash Borer

Well, it has been almost 2 years since Emerald Ash Borer was discovered in Parkville, MO.  Where are we at now?  The bad news is that it shows no signs of slowing down.  Since January, I have personally found three confirmed infestations from North Overland Park to the far southern reaches of Johnson County.  Hold on to your hat everyone...it's going to be a long, painful ride!  While there have been many publications and differing opinions about EAB, the basic facts remain the same.

Spider Mites & Bagworms

We've seen our first sightings  this season of Spider Mites and Bagworms!  Spider Mites are wreaking havoc on Burning Bushes and Bagworms are just getting hungrier by the day..Spider Mites typically feed on Burning Bush and Alberta Spruces.  The best way to test for them is the "White paper test".  Hold a sheet of white paper under the bush and give it a shake.  If you see ground pepper sized insects on the paper, you have a problem and need to treat.
