That’s a lot of water!

Since we are in the Olympic spirit I thought I would blog about something dealing with the Olympics. At the London Aquatic Center there are 3 pools with a total volume of 2.6 million gallons of water. The average American uses 80-100 gallons a day. If you used the water from the 3 pools at London’s Aquatic Center to live on you could go 71 years before you needed water and that is using 100 gallons a day!! Probably never thought of those pools like that before.

Maybe a break from the extreme heat?

Well as I'm looking at the 10 day forecast it is looking like we might need to get our jackets out. After today's 100 degree high we might have a nice break from the heat. Okay, maybe we don't need jackets, but with the forcast showing 90's anything is better than 100+. Now we just need some rain. Hopefully this is a trend and not just by chance that we are lowering in temperature. Well if anything enjoy the 80's for Friday and Saturday as well as the cool nights and lower highs for the next 10 days.

Water quality

Only Rain in the Drain!  Do not dump yard waste in storm drains or natural waterways.  Storm drains lead directly into our streams and rivers without treatment.  It decomposes, releases foul odors and leads to poor water quality.

AN ALTERNATIVE TO SPRAY HEADS
Known as rotating sprinkler nozzles, matched precipitation rate sprinklers and rotary nozzles, MP Rotators are small rotors that can be retrofitted to any pop-up spray head body. Pop-up spray head bodies equipped with MP Rotators use less water than conventional spray heads. By simply replacing the spay nozzle with the MP Rotator, the system will produce lower precipitation rates and higher uniformity.

School Supply Drive

Aspen Lawn Care as part of Mid America Green Industries is working hard to help children and families in need. Aspen is currently participating in a charitable event that supplies school supplies for the inner city, Holy Name School. Aspen is asking for the help of our lawn care family to supply as many school supplies to children in need as possible. Aspen Lawn Care will be collecting donations from July 5th 2011 –August 1, 2011 and will be matching a portion of all items collected.

Snow doesn’t stand a chance…

Over the years, we've had a few concerns from customers about the small amount of snow left on driveways after backdragging them with truck plows.  We've listened to those concerns and as of the last two seasons, we've starting changing many of our plows out for C-plows.  This plow is designed specifically for backdragging driveways and does a much better job than traditional plows.  See illustration for how the plow creates a reverse C so that there is more immediate down-pressure from the plow to the driveway which results in a cleaner driveway.

New USDA Hardiness Map

Finally, we're considered Zone 6...we've been planting like zone 6 for years, even though USDA said we were Zone 5.  Beware though that many plants that are considred to thrive in zone 6 southern states, doesnt mean they will thrive in our tough environment with clay soil and hot summers.  We recommend using only plants that are proven to thrive in this area and/or are grown locally.
